They Were 99x – Part Deux
I’ve listened to “Rock 100.5.” I don’t believe I’ll be doing it again.
If you’re interested Sean Demery offers his own thoughts on the birth, growth and demise of 99x. It’s a good read.

It had been a long time coming. First Sean Demery left at the beginning of 2000. Then the “Morning X” began to suffer shake-ups in its lineup replacing Barnes with Toucher and then Toucher, Crash and Jimmy all leaving. Then Sean came back in 2006, but left again after just over a year.
Finally, last Friday the AJC reported that 99x will no longer exist on its traditional frequency as of next week. (You can still hear it online and on HD-2 radio.) Furthermore, two of the originals who were around since the Power99 days, Leslie Fram and Steve Craig were fired. Q100 will move over and become Q99 and with it will come the mountain of crap they play, broadcast at 100,000 watts. Yee hah.
It lasted sixteen years, which was a hell of a lot longer than anyone thought, but it seems Alternative music is really on its way out the door. In some respects, I can’t help but think this is a good thing. The label “alternative” had long since outlived any sort of real description of the music and instead, had just become a marketing tag. On the other hand, I was listening in the car as Power99 signed off and 99x signed on. So the end of an era brings with it a bit of melancholy, as change often does.
We’ll have to see how things go, but for right now, I’m just happy the car has a CD player in it. I think it’s time the radio got a little vacation.
